In 2013 and 2014, we constructed six deep wells in the various districts of Gofila, which can be operated with mechanical pumps. Each well is between 60 – 100 m deep and provides between 1,000 – 4,000 l/h of water. The wells were built by the company SHS from Ouagadougou. They have been in operation for a couple of years now and run perfectly. The costs for this project were 46,000 Euro.
For the people of Gofila, the construction of these deep wells led to a considerable improvement of their living conditions. They now have enough water for drinking, cooking and for watering the animals, which are their main livelihood. Most of them used to only bathe themselves during rainy season – which has led to terrible conditions caused by poor hygiene. So far, women sometimes had to walk several kilometers in order to reach the next shallow well (20 m deep). During dry season, these shallow wells are often dried up and the water quality is very poor (e.g. brown water) and can be contaminated by rotting animals which have fallen into the well.
We would like to thank the company Faist Anlagenbau GmbH, the Rotary Club Günzburg and all participants of the “Well Run” in Jettingen for their generous donations. With their help, we were able to successfully realize this project.
